Akademisk avhandling. Med sammanfattning på engelska. | English Summary. 'Winter villages. The territories of a band society in the inland of Norrland, 4500-2500 BC'. - One of the largest prehistoric features in Norrland is the so called fire-cracked stone mound, a large shallow pit surrounded by a mound or midden of fire-cracked stones and other refuse material. Size differs from around 10 m up to more than 20 m in diameter including the surrounding mound. Different interpretations have been given but not until a 1976 excavation in Vilhelmina parish, Västerbotten county, did the conclusion that they were house constructions become clear. More than 80 house remains of this kind have so far been found in the woodlands of the middle part of Norrland, east of the high mountains and some 100 km west of the coastal area. The main issues in this thesis were primarily to see if the locations of the house remains displayed a settlement pattern, and secondly if the artifacts and refuse material as well as the datings show enough similarity to suggest that they belonged to one people with a shared economy and maybe also shared values. The artifacts and refuse material from the house remains indicate a neolithic hunter-gatherer society. Anthropological material about recent hunters and gatherers in northern parts of the world was used to get a better understanding of what the subsistence strategies and the social structures look like among these people. Theories referring to band societies show certain common traits all over the world and in different environments. These have also been useful and many of the models presented over the years are based on records of North American Indian societies. Literature about these societies has been a very fruitful source for this work. The archaeological records consist of information on size, form and location from 63 registered houses, and excavation reports from another 20 house remains. Together they are scattered over an area of more than 60,000 km2. Ämnesord: Lappland, Arkeologi, Jämtland, Härjedalen, Gravskick, Archaeology
